What is the sowing time of sunflower?

Sunflower is an important oilseed crop grown by many farmers in India because of its short duration, good market demand, and ability to grow in different climatic conditions. One of the most common questions farmers ask is about the correct sowing time of sunflower. Sowing at the right time is very important because it affects germination, plant growth, pest incidence, and final yield.

Sunflower is a warm-season crop and grows best in moderate temperature with good sunlight. It does not tolerate extreme cold, frost, or prolonged waterlogging. The sowing time mainly depends on rainfall pattern, temperature, and irrigation facilities in the region. In India, sunflower can be grown in three main seasons: Kharif, Rabi, and Summer.

During the Kharif season, sunflower is sown with the onset of the southwest monsoon. The ideal sowing time is from June to July. Adequate rainfall during this period helps in good germination and early plant growth. Farmers should ensure proper drainage because sunflower does not like standing water. Delayed sowing beyond July may expose the crop to pest and disease problems and can reduce seed yield.

The Rabi season sunflower is grown in regions where winters are mild and irrigation is available. The recommended sowing time for Rabi sunflower is from October to November. During this season, the crop depends mainly on irrigation, as rainfall is limited. Rabi sunflower usually faces fewer weed problems and gives good yield if irrigation is managed properly. Very late sowing should be avoided, as low temperatures during flowering can affect seed setting.

The Summer season is also suitable for sunflower cultivation in irrigated areas. Summer sowing is generally done from January to February. Since there is no rainfall during this period, timely and adequate irrigation is essential throughout the crop growth. Summer sunflower often performs well because it grows under clear weather conditions with plenty of sunlight, which helps in better oil content. However, farmers must be careful about water stress, especially during flowering and seed filling stages.

Apart from the season, local climatic conditions should always be considered. Sunflower grows best when the temperature ranges between 20°C and 30°C. Very high temperatures during flowering can cause poor seed filling, while cold conditions slow down growth. Farmers should also select suitable varieties recommended for their region and season.

Soil moisture at the time of sowing is another important factor. Seeds should be sown when the soil has enough moisture for germination but is not too wet. Proper land preparation and timely sowing help in uniform plant stand and better crop management.

In summary, the sowing time of sunflower in India depends on the season and location. June–July for Kharif, October–November for Rabi, and January–February for Summer are the generally recommended periods. By choosing the right sowing time and managing water properly, farmers can achieve healthy crop growth, better seed yield, and higher oil content in sunflower cultivation.
