Yellowing in Onions: Causes and Remedies Onions are widely used

What is the sowing time for onion crop?

Onion is an important vegetable crop grown widely across India, and choosing the correct sowing time plays a major role in getting good yield and quality bulbs. Onion is sensitive to temperature and day length, so sowing at the right time helps proper bulb formation and reduces problems like bolting, poor bulb size, and diseases. The sowing time of onion varies depending on region, season, and whether the crop is grown for bulb production or green onion use.

In India, onion is mainly grown in Kharif, Rabi, and late Kharif seasons. For the Kharif onion crop, nursery sowing is usually done from May to June. Transplanting of seedlings is carried out during July to August, depending on the onset of monsoon. Kharif onions are mainly grown in regions with good rainfall and drainage. Care should be taken to protect seedlings from heavy rains and waterlogging, as excess moisture can damage young plants.

The late Kharif onion crop is another important season, especially in parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh. For this crop, nursery sowing is done during August to September, and transplanting is carried out in October. Late Kharif onions are important for meeting market demand during winter months.

The most widely grown onion crop in India is the Rabi season onion. For Rabi onion, nursery sowing is done from October to November, and transplanting is done during December to January. Rabi onion gives better bulb size, higher yield, and good storage quality compared to Kharif onion. Cool and dry weather during bulb formation helps produce firm and well-shaped bulbs.

In some regions with assured irrigation, onion is also grown during the summer season. Nursery sowing for summer onion is usually done in December to January, and transplanting is carried out in February to March. Summer onion requires careful irrigation and protection from heat stress, but it can give good returns due to higher market prices.

The onion crop grows best at moderate temperatures. Seed germination is good when temperatures are around 20–25°C. Bulb formation requires slightly higher temperatures and longer day length. Very high temperatures or extreme cold during early stages affect plant growth and bulb development. Therefore, sowing should be planned so that bulb formation does not coincide with extreme weather conditions.

Proper nursery management is very important along with sowing time. Seedlings should be healthy and 6–8 weeks old at the time of transplanting. Over-aged or weak seedlings do not establish well in the field and result in poor bulb formation.

In conclusion, the sowing time for onion depends on the season and region. Generally, nursery sowing is done during May–June for Kharif, August–September for late Kharif, and October–November for Rabi onion. Transplanting follows after 6–8 weeks. By following the recommended sowing time and good nursery management, farmers can achieve healthy crop growth, better bulb formation, and higher onion yields.
