What is the recommended spacing for coconut?

Coconut is an important perennial crop grown widely in India, especially in coastal and tropical regions. Proper spacing between coconut palms is one of the most important factors that decides the long-term health of the plantation and the final yield. Many farmers ask about the right spacing because coconut palms stay in the field for many years, and mistakes made at planting time are difficult to correct later.

The recommended spacing for coconut mainly depends on soil type, rainfall, variety, and method of cultivation. In general, coconut palms require enough space for root spread, canopy growth, sunlight penetration, and good air circulation. If palms are planted too closely, they compete for nutrients, water, and light, which reduces growth and nut yield. On the other hand, very wide spacing leads to underuse of land.

For most regions in India, the commonly recommended spacing for coconut is 7.5 meters × 7.5 meters. This spacing allows proper growth of the palm and ensures good sunlight to all sides. With this spacing, about 175 to 180 coconut palms can be planted per hectare. This spacing is suitable for tall and hybrid coconut varieties grown under normal soil and rainfall conditions.

In fertile soils with good moisture-holding capacity and assured irrigation, farmers may slightly reduce the spacing to 7 meters × 7 meters. This allows planting of more palms per area, but careful nutrient and water management is required to avoid competition. In lighter soils or dry areas, wider spacing such as 8 meters × 8 meters is preferred, as it reduces stress on the palms and supports better root development.

For dwarf coconut varieties, spacing can be slightly closer because these palms have smaller canopies compared to tall varieties. Spacing of 6.5 meters × 6.5 meters is commonly followed for dwarf types. However, farmers should still ensure good sunlight and airflow to reduce pest and disease problems.

Spacing is also influenced by the planting system. In the square system, palms are planted at equal distance in both directions, which is the most common and easiest method. In the triangular system, palms are planted in a triangle pattern, allowing about 15 percent more palms per area. This system is useful where land is limited, but it requires careful layout. In hilly areas, contour planting is followed to prevent soil erosion, while maintaining recommended spacing between palms.

Proper spacing also helps farmers take up intercropping during the early years of coconut cultivation. Since coconut palms take several years to fully occupy the space, crops like banana, pineapple, vegetables, pulses, or fodder can be grown in between rows. This provides additional income and better land use, especially in the first 5 to 7 years.

In summary, the recommended spacing for coconut is usually 7.5 meters × 7.5 meters, with adjustments based on soil type, rainfall, and variety. Correct spacing ensures healthy palms, better nut yield, easier field operations, and long-term productivity. By planning spacing carefully at planting time, farmers can build a strong and profitable coconut plantation for many years.
