Title: Government Scheme Query: Understanding How Government Schemes Benefit Citizens

What is the recommended seed rate of sunflower?

Sunflower is an important oilseed crop grown across many states in India. Farmers prefer sunflower because it requires less water than many other crops, grows well in different soil types, and gives good returns. To get a healthy crop and achieve better yield, one of the most important factors is using the correct seed rate. Seed rate refers to the amount of seed required per acre or per hectare to get the right plant population. Too many plants create crowding, while too few plants reduce the total yield. Understanding the recommended seed rate helps farmers plan better and avoid unnecessary costs.

The recommended seed rate for sunflower generally depends on the variety, season, and spacing followed. On average, sunflower seeds need to be sown at a spacing of 60 cm between rows and 30 cm between plants. This gives a plant population of around 22,000 to 25,000 plants per hectare.

Based on this spacing, the recommended seed rate for sunflower is usually:

2 to 2.5 kg per acre (or)

5 to 6 kg per hectare

This seed rate ensures enough plants to cover the field well while giving each plant enough space for proper growth. If seeds are of good quality and have a high germination percentage, farmers can use the lower end of the seed rate. If the seed quality is average or germination is slightly low, a slightly higher seed rate may be required.

Seed size also affects the seed rate. Hybrid varieties often have larger seeds, so they may require a slightly higher seed quantity. On the other hand, some improved varieties with smaller seeds need slightly less. Farmers should always check the seed packet for germination percentage and adjust the seed rate accordingly.

The method of sowing also plays a role. In line sowing, which is the most recommended method, the seed rate is standard and easy to follow. But in broadcasting, more seeds are needed because spacing becomes uneven and seed wastage is higher. Broadcasting is generally not recommended for sunflower because it leads to watery or weak plants and uneven flowering.

For best results, seeds should be treated before sowing. Treating seeds with suitable fungicides and insecticides protects them from diseases during germination and early growth. This helps improve the effective germination rate, which means the farmer can maintain the desired plant population even with the recommended seed rate.

Seed depth also matters. Sunflower seeds should be sown 3–5 cm deep in moist soil. Shallow sowing may cause the seeds to dry out, while very deep sowing may delay germination. Proper soil moisture at sowing ensures quick and uniform sprouting.

Farmers should also avoid sowing sunflower too densely. Overcrowding leads to weak stems, smaller heads, and lower oil content. On the other hand, overly wide spacing reduces total yield per acre even though individual plants may become larger.

In summary, using 2–2.5 kg of seed per acre (or 5–6 kg per hectare) with proper spacing and good-quality seeds is the best approach for sunflower cultivation. With correct seed rate, timely sowing, seed treatment, and good field management, farmers can achieve strong plant growth and higher yields, making sunflower cultivation more profitable and sustainable.
