Nutrient Management

Nutrient management is a critical aspect of maintaining soil health

What is the recommended fertilizer dose in garlic crop?

Recommended Fertilizer Dose in Garlic Crop

Garlic is an important spice crop grown in many parts of India. It is used daily in cooking and also has medicinal value. To get a good yield of garlic, proper nutrient management is very important. Garlic has shallow roots and requires nutrients at the right time for healthy bulb development. If the fertilizer is not applied correctly, the bulbs may remain small and yield will be low. Therefore, understanding the recommended fertilizer dose and the correct method of application helps farmers achieve better production.

Basic Nutrient Requirement

Garlic requires Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) in proper proportion. Along with these, organic matter, sulfur, zinc, and boron are also helpful for better growth and bulb formation.

For one hectare of garlic crop, the general recommendation is:

Nutrient Recommended Dose
Nitrogen (N) 100–120 kg/ha
Phosphorus (P₂O₅) 50–60 kg/ha
Potassium (K₂O) 50–60 kg/ha

This means farmers can apply around 250–300 kg Urea, 300–350 kg Single Super Phosphate (SSP), and 100–120 kg Muriate of Potash (MOP) per hectare.

Use of Organic Manure

Before sowing, apply well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) at 15–20 tons per hectare and mix it well into the soil. Organic matter improves soil structure, increases water holding capacity, and enhances nutrient availability. Compost and cow dung should be fully decomposed; otherwise, it may cause pest or disease problems.

Basal Dose (Before Planting)

Apply the full dose of Phosphorus (SSP) and Potassium (MOP) during field preparation.

Mix them well by plowing or harrowing.

Apply one-third of Nitrogen at this stage.

This helps in strong root establishment and initial growth of the garlic plant.

Top Dressing (After Planting)

Apply the remaining two-thirds of Nitrogen in two equal splits.

First top dressing: 30–35 days after planting.

Second top dressing: 55–60 days after planting.

Irrigate lightly after each top dressing to help nutrients mix well in the soil and reach plant roots.

Role of Secondary and Micronutrients

Sulfur is very important for garlic because it helps improve sharpness, aroma, and bulb quality. SSP fertilizer already contains sulfur, but if not used, apply 20–30 kg sulfur/ha separately.

Zinc deficiency can reduce bulb size. Apply Zinc Sulfate @ 25 kg/ha once in soil.

Boron helps in proper bulb development. Spray Boron (Borax) 0.2% solution during bulb formation stage.

Irrigation and Weed Management

Nutrient application works best when:

Irrigation is given at regular intervals, keeping soil moist but not waterlogged.

Weed growth is controlled, as weeds also consume nutrients meant for garlic.

Conclusion

For a good garlic crop, applying the right amount of fertilizers at the right time is essential. A balanced dose of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium, along with organic manure and micronutrients like sulfur and boron, helps in producing bigger and healthier bulbs. With proper nutrient management, farmers can achieve higher yield and better market value for their garlic produce.
