Title: A Comprehensive Guide to Crop Insurance Schemes: Protecting Farmers,

What is the recommended dose of Metribuzin 70%?

Metribuzin 70% is a commonly used herbicide in many crops, especially potato, soybean, tomato, and some cereals. It is mainly used to control broad-leaf weeds and certain grassy weeds during the early stages of crop growth. When used correctly, Metribuzin helps keep the field clean, reduces competition for nutrients, and improves overall crop growth. However, using the wrong dose or spraying at the wrong time can damage the crop. Therefore, understanding the recommended dose and proper usage is very important for farmers.

The recommended dose of Metribuzin 70% WP generally ranges between 350 to 700 grams per hectare, depending on the crop and soil type. For most crops like potato and soybean, a dose of around 350–500 g per hectare is sufficient. In fields with heavy weed pressure or more problematic weed species, farmers may need to use up to 700 g per hectare, but only if the crop is tolerant. The exact dose can vary slightly based on the brand, crop variety, and local conditions.

Metribuzin can be applied pre-emergence (after sowing but before the crop and weeds emerge) or post-emergence (after the crop has emerged). However, the dose differs for each method. In pre-emergence application, lower doses are usually enough because the herbicide prevents weed seeds from germinating. In post-emergence spraying, weeds are already growing, so slightly higher doses may be needed, but the crop stage must be carefully checked.

One important point for farmers is crop safety. Not all crops tolerate Metribuzin equally. For example, potato and soybean tolerate the herbicide well when used at the correct dose. But tomato, wheat, and some vegetable crops may show yellowing or leaf burn if overdosed. Sandy soils and low-organic matter soils increase the risk of crop injury because the herbicide moves faster in such soils.

Farmers should always test the spray on a small patch before spraying the entire field, especially if they are using Metribuzin for the first time on a particular crop. This helps prevent unexpected crop damage.

To use the herbicide properly, farmers should mix the measured quantity of Metribuzin 70% WP with water and spray evenly across the field. Using 500–600 liters of water per hectare helps achieve good coverage. The field should have enough moisture at the time of spraying. Very dry soil reduces herbicide effectiveness, while waterlogged soil increases the risk of crop injury.

Weed identification is another important factor. Metribuzin works best against common broad-leaf weeds like chenopodium (bathua), amaranthus, and some grassy weeds. If the field has weeds that do not respond well to Metribuzin, farmers may need to combine it with other herbicides or use mechanical weeding.

Farmers should avoid spraying during very hot or very cold weather. Spraying during calm, sunny mornings gives the best results.

By using the correct recommended dose—generally 350–700 grams per hectare depending on the crop—along with proper timing and precautions, Metribuzin 70% can effectively control weeds and improve crop growth without causing harm to the crop. Balanced and careful herbicide use helps ensure healthy fields and better yields.
