What is the average yield and duration of the sorghum crop?

Sorghum, also known as jowar, is an important cereal crop grown widely in India for both grain and fodder purposes. It is valued for its ability to grow under dry conditions and provide stable yield where other crops may fail. Farmers often ask about the average yield and duration of the sorghum crop, as this information helps in planning cropping systems, irrigation, and market decisions.

The duration of the sorghum crop depends on the variety grown, season, and purpose of cultivation. Sorghum is generally classified into short-duration, medium-duration, and long-duration types. Most grain sorghum varieties grown in India have a crop duration of 90 to 120 days from sowing to harvest. Short-duration varieties mature in about 90–100 days and are suitable for areas with limited rainfall or where early harvest is needed. Medium-duration varieties take around 105–115 days and are commonly grown under normal rainfall conditions. Long-duration varieties may take up to 120 days, especially under irrigated conditions.

For fodder sorghum, the crop duration is usually shorter. Single-cut fodder sorghum varieties are ready for harvest in about 50 to 60 days, while multi-cut varieties can be harvested several times over a period of 90 to 110 days. These varieties are mainly grown to provide green fodder for livestock and are valued for quick regrowth.

The average yield of sorghum varies based on crop management, variety, soil fertility, rainfall, and whether the crop is grown under rainfed or irrigated conditions. Under rainfed conditions, grain sorghum yield generally ranges from 10 to 20 quintals per hectare. In areas with good rainfall and proper crop management, yields can reach the higher end of this range.

Under irrigated conditions, sorghum yield improves significantly. With timely irrigation, balanced fertilization, and good pest and weed management, grain yield can range from 25 to 35 quintals per hectare. In well-managed fields, some farmers may even achieve higher yields.

For fodder sorghum, the average green fodder yield varies with variety and management. Single-cut fodder sorghum generally produces 300 to 400 quintals of green fodder per hectare within 50–60 days. Multi-cut varieties can produce even higher cumulative fodder yield over multiple cuts when supplied with adequate nutrients and water.

Several factors influence both yield and duration of the sorghum crop. Timely sowing ensures the crop uses available moisture efficiently and avoids stress during flowering. Balanced nutrient management supports healthy growth and grain filling. Weed control during early stages is critical, as weeds compete strongly with young sorghum plants. Pest and disease management also affects yield, as severe infestations reduce plant vigour and grain formation.

Soil type and moisture availability play a major role. Sorghum performs best in well-drained soils with good moisture-holding capacity. Prolonged drought or waterlogging can reduce yield and extend crop duration due to stress.

In conclusion, the sorghum crop generally has a duration of 90 to 120 days for grain and 50 to 110 days for fodder, depending on variety and purpose. Average grain yield ranges from 10 to 20 quintals per hectare under rainfed conditions and 25 to 35 quintals per hectare under irrigation. With proper management practices, farmers can achieve stable yields and make sorghum a reliable crop in their farming system.
