What is nano urea and how is it used in wheat crop?

Wheat is one of the major crops grown across many parts of India. For good growth and yield, wheat requires proper nutrition, especially nitrogen. Traditionally, farmers use granular urea, but in recent years, nano urea has become popular as a modern and efficient option. Many farmers are now asking what nano urea is and how it should be used in wheat. Here is an easy-to-understand guide written in farmer-friendly language.

1. What Is Nano Urea?

Nano urea is a liquid fertilizer made using nanotechnology. It contains nitrogen particles in extremely small size (nano size), which makes them more active and easily absorbable by plants. Because the particles are so tiny, the plant can absorb nitrogen more efficiently through leaves, giving a faster and better response.

Unlike traditional urea, which is applied to the soil, nano urea is sprayed on the leaves. One bottle of nano urea (500 ml) is considered equal to one bag of granular urea (45 kg) in nutrient efficiency, when used correctly.

Nano urea helps reduce fertilizer cost, improves nutrient use efficiency, and lowers nitrogen loss in the soil, making it more environment-friendly.

2. Why Use Nano Urea in Wheat?

Wheat requires nitrogen at different stages for leaf growth, tillering, and grain formation. Traditional urea often gets lost through leaching, evaporation, or poor soil conditions. Nano urea gives the plant nitrogen directly through leaves, reducing wastage.

Benefits in wheat include:

Better tiller formation

Stronger green leaves

Improved root development

Uniform growth

Higher grain filling and yield

Farmers who use nano urea correctly often see good results with lower cost.

3. When to Use Nano Urea in Wheat?

Timing is very important. Wheat crops respond best to foliar nitrogen at the right stages. Nano urea should be sprayed at two key stages:

First spray:
30–35 days after sowing (at crown root initiation stage)
This helps strong root growth and tillering.

Second spray:
50–55 days after sowing (at tillering or early jointing stage)
This boosts leaf growth and prepares the plant for flowering.

Spraying too early or too late will not give the best results.

4. How to Use Nano Urea?

Using nano urea correctly ensures maximum benefit:

Mix 2–4 ml of nano urea per litre of clean water.

For one acre, around 500 ml nano urea is sufficient.

Spray using a fine-mist sprayer so leaves get uniform coverage.

Spray during morning or evening, not in hot afternoon.

Avoid spraying before rain or when the crop is wet.

Nano urea should be used as a foliar spray only. Do not apply it to the soil like normal urea.

5. Should Nano Urea Replace All Urea?

Nano urea can reduce the use of granular urea but should not completely replace it in all soils. For wheat, farmers can reduce one or two traditional urea applications and replace them with nano urea sprays.

A balanced approach is best:

Apply basal dose of fertilizers normally.

Replace top-dress urea applications with nano urea sprays.

This reduces cost, avoids excess nitrogen, and keeps the crop healthy.
