What are the sowing times and suitable varieties of ridge gourd crop?

Ridge gourd is a popular vegetable crop grown by farmers across India because of its fast growth, good yield, and regular market demand. It is suitable for cultivation in different seasons and can be grown in both small and large farms. To get good quality fruits and higher yield, it is important to follow the correct sowing time and choose suitable varieties based on local climate and season.

Ridge gourd grows well in warm weather and does not tolerate cold or frost. It requires moderate temperature and good sunlight for healthy growth and fruiting. The crop can be grown in three main seasons in India: summer, rainy (kharif), and in some regions, mild winter with protection.

For summer season cultivation, sowing is usually done from January to February in southern and central India. In northern India, sowing can be done from February to March, after severe cold has passed. Summer ridge gourd requires assured irrigation because rainfall is low during this period. With proper water management, the crop grows well and gives early harvest.

For the rainy or kharif season, sowing is done from June to July, at the onset of monsoon. This is the most common season for ridge gourd cultivation. Rainy season provides enough moisture for seed germination and early growth. However, good drainage is very important, as waterlogging can damage roots and increase disease problems.

In some parts of southern India and coastal regions, ridge gourd can also be grown during mild winter months. Sowing is done from September to October where frost is not a problem. Winter cultivation requires careful management of irrigation and pests but can give good returns due to better market prices.

Ridge gourd is usually sown directly in the main field. Seeds are sown in pits or on raised beds. Proper spacing helps in better vine growth, good air circulation, and easy harvesting. Providing support like trellis or bower system improves fruit quality and yield.

Choosing the right variety is equally important. Many improved and local varieties of ridge gourd are available, and farmers should select them based on season, disease tolerance, and market preference.

One popular variety is Pusa Nasdar. This variety produces long, straight fruits with prominent ridges and good green colour. It is suitable for both summer and rainy seasons and gives good yield under proper management.

Arka Sumeet is another improved variety known for uniform fruits and high productivity. It performs well in warm climates and is suitable for commercial cultivation. Fruits are tender and preferred in the market.

Arka Prashant is an early-maturing variety that produces attractive fruits with good shelf life. It is suitable for summer and rainy season cultivation and gives consistent yield.

Many farmers also grow local varieties that are well adapted to regional conditions. These varieties may not always give very high yield, but they perform reliably under local climate and soil conditions and are preferred in nearby markets.

Hybrid ridge gourd varieties are also available and are becoming popular among farmers. Hybrids usually give higher yield, uniform fruits, and better resistance to pests and diseases. Though hybrid seeds are costlier, they often give better returns if managed properly.

In conclusion, ridge gourd can be grown successfully in summer and rainy seasons, and in mild winter regions. Sowing time should be chosen based on local climate, and suitable varieties should be selected for better yield and market value. With proper sowing time, good variety selection, and basic crop care, farmers can earn good income from ridge gourd cultivation.
