Title: Exploring the Mustard Spectrum: A Journey through Varieties of

What are the recommended varieties in chilli?

Chilli is one of the most important vegetable and spice crops grown across India. It is used in cooking, pickles, masalas, and even in food processing industries. Choosing the right chilli variety is very important because different varieties perform better in different climates, have different levels of pungency, and differ in yield, disease resistance, and market demand. By selecting the right variety, farmers can improve production and get better income.

In India, chilli is grown in almost all states, and many improved varieties have been developed for higher yield and quality. These varieties can be broadly divided into two groups: fresh (green) chilli varieties and dry chilli varieties.

For green chilli cultivation, several varieties are popular. Pusa Jwala is one of the most widely grown varieties known for its long, slender fruit and medium pungency. It performs well in many regions and gives a good yield. Pusa Sadabahar is another good option, especially because it has tolerance to mosaic virus, which is a common disease in chilli fields. Pant C-1 and Kashi Anmol are also preferred for their uniform fruit size and continuous fruiting habit, making them suitable for both small and large farmers.

For dry chilli production, varieties like Byadagi, Sannam, and Guntur types are well known and highly demanded in the market. Byadagi is famous for its deep red color and low pungency; it is widely used in making chilli powder for its strong coloring properties. Sannam is one of the most commonly cultivated varieties for dry chilli because of its high pungency and good dry matter recovery. The Guntur varieties, especially from Andhra Pradesh, are known for their strong heat and deep color, making them very popular in domestic and export markets.

In recent years, hybrid chilli varieties have also become popular because they offer higher yields, uniform fruits, and better resistance to pests and diseases. Some popular hybrid varieties include Tejaswini, Indam 5, LCA 334, US 341, and Rasi RCH hybrids. These hybrids produce larger fruits, have better shelf life, and are suitable for farmers who want to target both local and distant markets.

Farmers growing chillies in disease-prone areas should choose varieties with resistance or tolerance to common problems like mosaic virus, leaf curl virus, and powdery mildew. For example, varieties like Punjab Lal, Kashi Anmol, and Arka Harita have better tolerance to viral diseases. Choosing such varieties helps reduce pesticide use and improves crop health.

Climate also plays a role in selecting the variety. In hotter regions, varieties that tolerate high temperatures and stress are recommended. In cooler regions, early-maturing varieties work better because they complete their growth before severe winter conditions.

Market preference is another important factor. Some markets prefer dark red chillies, while others look for long and slender green chillies. Farmers should understand local market demand before choosing the variety.

In simple words, there are many recommended chilli varieties—Pusa Jwala, Pusa Sadabahar, Byadagi, Sannam, Guntur types, and several hybrids—each suitable for different climates and market needs. By selecting the right variety and understanding local growing conditions, farmers can achieve better yields and earn higher profits from chilli cultivation.
