What are the popular varieties of spring maize?

Spring maize is becoming an increasingly popular crop among farmers in many parts of India. It grows well during the warm months from February to June and offers good yields with proper management. One of the most important decisions farmers make is choosing the right variety. A good maize variety should give high yield, have good disease resistance, tolerate heat, and produce strong cobs with well-filled grains. Over the years, several hybrid and improved varieties have become widely adopted by farmers. Knowing these varieties helps farmers select the best option for their soil, climate, and farming goals.

One of the commonly grown varieties of spring maize is HM-4, a hybrid known for its strong growth and good cob size. Farmers prefer it because it performs well even under slightly high temperatures, which is common during the spring season. It also has a uniform grain color and good market acceptance.

Ganga-11 is another popular option. It is known for its stable yield performance across different regions. Farmers like this variety because it matures in a moderate time and produces well-filled cobs. It is also relatively tolerant to certain pests and diseases, making it a reliable choice for spring cultivation.

Vivek Hybrid 9, developed for hill and plain areas, is suitable for farmers who want early-maturing maize. It performs well even in less fertile soils and produces good-quality grains. Its early maturity helps farmers avoid heat stress during the final growth stages, which can be a problem in late spring.

HQPM varieties such as HQPM-5 and HQPM-7 are also widely planted during the spring season. These “Quality Protein Maize” hybrids are valued for their improved nutritional content, especially higher levels of essential amino acids. Farmers growing maize for fodder or poultry feed often prefer these varieties because of their better protein quality.

In many regions, Shaktiman series varieties like Shaktiman-1, Shaktiman-2, and Shaktiman-4 have become very popular. These varieties are known for their high yield potential, good kernel quality, and strong disease resistance. They also tolerate higher temperatures better than some older varieties, making them a good fit for spring cultivation.

Some farmers also choose Pioneer hybrid varieties (such as 30V92 and 3396), which are well-known for their high productivity and uniform cobs. They are widely used in commercial farming due to their strong performance under different management conditions.

While selecting a spring maize variety, farmers should consider factors such as soil type, irrigation facilities, expected temperature, and local disease problems. Varieties that perform well in one region may not give the same results in another due to climate differences. Consulting local agricultural officers or experienced farmers can help in making the best choice.

Spring maize requires careful water management because temperatures rise as the season progresses. Choosing heat-tolerant and disease-resistant varieties ensures healthier plants and better yields even under challenging conditions.

By selecting the right variety and following proper cultivation practices, farmers can take full advantage of the spring maize season. Popular and proven varieties offer good yield, better stress tolerance, and improved grain quality, helping farmers earn more from their crop.
