How to prepare paste or wound dresser to cure canker?

Canker is a common and damaging disease seen in citrus plants like lemon, orange, and sweet lime. It causes rough, raised spots on leaves, stems, and fruits. In severe cases, the disease spreads quickly and weakens the plant, reduces fruit quality, and affects overall growth. One of the effective methods to manage canker is the timely application of a paste or wound dresser on infected areas. This paste helps kill the disease-causing organism, protects the exposed wound, and prevents further spread. Preparing such a paste is simple, and farmers can make it easily with basic ingredients.

The first step before applying any paste is cleaning the infected area. Farmers should carefully remove the damaged bark or infected tissue using a clean blade or knife. Only the diseased part should be scraped out; the healthy portion should not be damaged. After cleaning, the area should be allowed to dry for a few minutes before applying the paste.

A commonly used and effective wound-dressing mixture includes copper-based fungicide, lime, and sometimes linseed oil or cow dung paste. Copper compounds are well-known for controlling bacterial and fungal infections, including canker-causing bacteria.

A simple and effective paste that farmers can prepare at home includes:

1. Copper Oxychloride Paste

Take 100 grams of copper oxychloride powder.

Add 1–2 teaspoons of lime to help the paste stick and provide additional protection.

Mix with enough water to make a thick paste.
This paste can be directly applied to the infected area after cleaning.

2. Bordeaux Paste
Bordeaux mixture is another effective remedy against canker. It is commonly prepared using copper sulphate and lime.
To make the paste:

Dissolve 100 grams of copper sulphate in a small quantity of warm water.

In another container, dissolve 100 grams of lime in water.

Slowly mix both solutions together while stirring continuously to form a smooth paste.
This mixture is strong, long-lasting, and widely used to treat wounds on citrus plants.

3. Organic Wound Paste
Farmers who prefer organic methods can prepare a natural paste using:

1 part cow dung

1 part clay soil

A little neem oil or crushed neem leaves
Mix these ingredients well and apply the paste on the wound. Though not as strong as copper-based mixes, this paste helps protect the wound and provides mild antibacterial action.

Before applying any paste, the infected portion must be cleaned well, because leaving the diseased tissue behind may cause the infection to return. The paste should be applied evenly, covering the entire wound. Farmers should avoid exposing the treated wound to rain for at least a day, as water can wash away the paste.

Regular monitoring is important. If the canker reappears or spreads to other branches, pruning of infected twigs and reapplication of paste may be required. Proper orchard hygiene, avoiding overcrowding of branches, and timely copper sprays also help reduce canker incidence.

In simple words, preparing a canker-curing paste involves making a mixture using copper fungicides or natural ingredients, cleaning the infected area, and applying the paste neatly. With timely treatment and good orchard management, farmers can effectively control canker and keep their citrus trees healthy.
