Grafting on delicious variety of apple?

Grafting is an important method used in apple cultivation to produce healthy plants of desired varieties. The Delicious group of apple varieties is very popular among farmers because of good fruit quality, colour, taste, and market demand. Grafting helps farmers multiply Delicious apple varieties true to type and ensures early bearing and uniform orchards. Understanding the correct method and timing of grafting is essential for success.

In apple cultivation, grafting means joining a scion of the desired variety, such as Delicious, onto a suitable rootstock. The scion determines fruit quality, while the rootstock controls plant vigour, adaptability, and resistance to soil and climatic conditions. Since apple seeds do not produce true-to-type plants, grafting is the best way to propagate Delicious apple varieties.

The most commonly used rootstocks for grafting Delicious apples are seedling rootstocks or clonal rootstocks, depending on the growing region and orchard system. Seedling rootstocks are hardy and suitable for traditional orchards, while clonal rootstocks are preferred for high-density planting due to controlled tree size. Selection of a healthy and compatible rootstock is very important for successful grafting.

The best time for grafting Delicious apple is during the dormant season, usually in late winter to early spring. During this time, the plant sap starts moving slowly, which helps in good union between scion and rootstock. Grafting should be done before active bud break for better success.

The most commonly followed grafting methods in apple are tongue grafting and cleft grafting. Tongue grafting is widely used in nurseries because it gives a strong graft union. In this method, both scion and rootstock should be of similar thickness. Slanting cuts are made, followed by a small tongue cut, and both parts are fitted together tightly. Cleft grafting is used when the rootstock is thicker than the scion.

The selection of scion wood is very important for Delicious apple grafting. Scions should be taken from healthy, disease-free mother plants with proven good yield and fruit quality. Scion sticks should be mature, pencil-thick, and collected during dormancy. They should have well-developed buds and should be stored properly until grafting.

After joining the scion and rootstock, the graft union should be tied firmly using grafting tape or polythene strip. The union should be sealed properly to prevent moisture loss and infection. Loose tying results in poor contact and graft failure.

Post-grafting care plays a big role in success. Grafted plants should be kept in a protected area with moderate moisture. Excess watering should be avoided, but soil should not be allowed to dry completely. Once the scion starts sprouting, any shoots emerging from the rootstock below the graft union should be removed. This ensures that all energy goes into the Delicious scion.

Protection from pests, diseases, and strong winds is important during early stages. Grafted plants should be monitored regularly for proper growth. If managed well, grafted Delicious apple plants establish quickly and start developing a strong framework.

In conclusion, grafting is the most reliable method to propagate Delicious apple varieties. Using healthy scion wood, suitable rootstock, correct grafting method, and proper timing ensures high success rate. With good post-grafting care, farmers can raise strong apple plants that produce high-quality Delicious apples and give good returns over the years.
