Fertilizer Dose Information of Garlic Crop

Garlic is an important spice and cash crop grown by farmers across India. It is widely cultivated in states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Garlic needs fertile and well-drained soil, along with proper use of fertilizers, to get a good yield and quality bulbs. Fertilizer management plays a key role in increasing production, improving bulb size, and maintaining soil health.

Importance of Fertilizers in Garlic
Garlic plants require essential nutrients like nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) for proper growth. These nutrients help the plant grow healthy leaves, strong bulbs, and good aroma. Since garlic removes a lot of nutrients from the soil, farmers need to replace them by applying fertilizers in the right amount and at the right time. Balanced fertilizer use also improves the shelf life and market value of garlic.

Recommended Fertilizer Dose
The fertilizer requirement of garlic depends on soil type, fertility level, and variety. However, on average, for one hectare of land, the recommended fertilizer dose is:

  • Nitrogen (N): 100–120 kg per hectare

  • Phosphorus (P₂O₅): 50–60 kg per hectare

  • Potassium (K₂O): 50–60 kg per hectare

This fertilizer dose can be supplied using common fertilizers available in the market:

  • Urea for nitrogen

  • Single Super Phosphate (SSP) for phosphorus

  • Muriate of Potash (MOP) for potassium

Before applying chemical fertilizers, farmers should add 20–25 tons of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) or compost per hectare during land preparation. This improves soil structure, increases water-holding capacity, and enhances the effect of chemical fertilizers.

Method and Timing of Fertilizer Application

  1. Basal Application:
Before planting cloves, mix the full dose of phosphorus, potash, and half dose of nitrogen into the soil. This ensures that nutrients are available to the young garlic plants during their early growth.

  2. Top Dressing:
The remaining half of the nitrogen should be applied in two splits:

    • First top dressing about 30 days after planting, when the plants are well established.

    • Second top dressing about 45–50 days after planting, during the bulb formation stage.

Nitrogen at these stages helps in leaf development and bulb enlargement, which directly affects yield.

Important Tips for Fertilizer Use

  • Apply fertilizers when the soil is moist for better absorption.

  • Avoid using fresh or undecomposed manure, as it can harm the crop.

  • Irrigate the field after each fertilizer application to help nutrients reach the roots.

  • Use soil testing to determine the exact fertilizer needs of your field.

  • Avoid excessive nitrogen use, as it can delay bulb maturity and reduce storage quality.

Micronutrients and Additional Care
Besides NPK, garlic also benefits from small quantities of micronutrients like zinc, boron, and sulfur. Spraying zinc sulfate (0.5%) and borax (0.2%) during the vegetative stage can improve yield and bulb quality.

Conclusion
Proper fertilizer management is the key to a successful garlic crop. Balanced use of organic manure and chemical fertilizers ensures healthy growth, bigger bulbs, and better profits. By following the recommended fertilizer doses and timings, farmers can maintain soil fertility and achieve high-quality garlic that fetches a good price in the market.
