Chicory is grown for its leafy greens, roots, or as a specialty crop for food and medicinal use. To get better plant growth, uniform leaves, and good root development, many farmers are now using PGR and PGP. PGR means Plant Growth Regulator, which is a product that helps the plant manage growth processes like branching, flowering, and root formation. PGP means Plant Growth Promoter, which generally includes nutrients, amino acids, seaweed extracts, humic substances, beneficial microbes, and other bio-stimulants that improve overall plant health. Both can be useful in chicory, but they should be used correctly, at the right stage, and not in excess.
Before using any PGR or PGP, focus on basic crop management. Chicory responds best when soil fertility is balanced, irrigation is regular, and the crop is not under stress. If the plant is weak due to poor nutrition, water stress, or pest attack, even the best growth promoters will not give good results. So first ensure good seed, proper spacing, timely weeding, and recommended fertilizer dose.
PGP products are generally safer to start with. Many farmers use seaweed extract, humic acid, amino acid, or microbial consortia to improve root growth and leaf quality. In chicory, the first application is useful during early vegetative stage, after the seedlings establish well. For example, 15–20 days after transplanting or 20–25 days after direct sowing, you can spray a PGP like seaweed extract or amino acid to support early growth. This helps the plant develop more leaves and stronger roots. A second application can be done 10–15 days later to maintain steady growth. If chicory is grown for roots, humic acid or humate-based products are often used through irrigation water or soil drenching to improve root zone activity.
Microbial PGP, like beneficial bacteria or fungi, works best when applied to soil rather than only as a spray. Many farmers mix these with compost or apply through drip irrigation. Apply them when soil has moisture and avoid mixing with strong chemical pesticides immediately, because chemicals can kill beneficial microbes. If you are using bio-promoters, try to keep a gap of a few days between chemical sprays and microbial applications.
PGR should be used more carefully, because it can change plant growth strongly. In chicory, PGR use depends on your purpose. If you want more leafy growth, the goal is to keep the plant in healthy vegetative stage with more leaves. In that case, mild bio-stimulant PGP is usually enough, and heavy PGR use is not needed. However, if the crop shows slow growth, poor leaf expansion, or weak rooting, some farmers use rooting PGR (like auxin-based products) in very low dose as a foliar spray or drench during early stage. This is generally done soon after transplanting or when plants are small, because that is when roots are forming actively.
If chicory is being grown for root harvest, the focus is strong root development with balanced top growth. In such cases, farmers often use PGP like humic substances and seaweed extract to improve root bulk and overall plant health. Avoid overusing nitrogen or growth regulators that push too much leaf at the cost of roots. Also, avoid frequent sprays close to harvest, as it may affect quality and shelf life.
Some practical tips help you get better results. Always spray in the early morning or late evening. Use clean water and follow the label dose strictly. Do not mix many products together in one tank unless compatibility is known. Overdose can cause leaf burn, abnormal growth, or delayed maturity. It is better to do fewer sprays but at the right stage. If possible, try the product in a small patch first and observe the response for a week before using it on the full field.
In simple words, use PGP regularly in early and mid growth to improve plant strength, leaf size, and root health. Use PGR only when there is a clear need like weak rooting or uneven growth, and always in low, recommended dose. With correct timing and balanced crop care, PGR and PGP can help chicory plants grow more uniformly and give better yield and quality.
