What is PM Fasal Bima Yojana?

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, commonly known as PM Fasal Bima Yojana, is a crop insurance scheme launched by the Government of India to protect farmers from financial loss due to crop damage. Farming in India largely depends on weather, and crops are often affected by drought, floods, heavy rainfall, cyclones, hailstorms, pests, and diseases. When crops fail, farmers face serious income loss. This scheme was introduced to give farmers financial security and confidence.

The main objective of PM Fasal Bima Yojana is to provide insurance coverage and financial support to farmers in case of crop loss or damage due to natural calamities or unavoidable risks. The scheme also aims to stabilize farmers’ income and encourage them to adopt improved farming practices without fear of losing their investment.

Under this scheme, many types of crops are covered. These include food crops like rice, wheat, pulses, oilseeds, and also commercial and horticultural crops that are notified by the respective state governments. Both small and large farmers can benefit from this scheme.

One of the most important features of PM Fasal Bima Yojana is the low premium amount that farmers have to pay. For kharif crops, farmers pay only a small fixed portion of the insurance premium. For rabi crops and other crops, the farmer’s share is also kept low. The remaining premium amount is paid by the central and state governments. This makes crop insurance affordable for all farmers, including small and marginal ones.

The scheme provides coverage at different stages of the crop cycle. It covers prevented sowing when farmers are unable to sow crops due to adverse weather conditions. It also covers crop loss during the growing period caused by natural disasters, pests, and diseases. In addition, it offers coverage for post-harvest losses for a short period if harvested crops are damaged by rain or storms.

Both loanee and non-loanee farmers can enroll in PM Fasal Bima Yojana. Loanee farmers are those who have taken crop loans from banks, while non-loanee farmers are those who have not taken loans. Farmers can enroll through banks, common service centers, insurance company offices, or online portals. They need to provide details such as land records, crop information, and bank account details.

Crop loss assessment is done using crop cutting experiments along with modern tools such as mobile applications and satellite data in many areas. This helps in quicker and more transparent assessment of damage. Once the claim is approved, the compensation amount is directly transferred to the farmer’s bank account.

PM Fasal Bima Yojana helps farmers recover from crop loss and prepare for the next cropping season. It reduces dependence on borrowing money during difficult times and supports financial stability. The scheme plays an important role in protecting farmers from the risks of uncertain weather and natural disasters.

In conclusion, PM Fasal Bima Yojana is a valuable scheme for Indian farmers. By providing affordable crop insurance and timely financial support, it helps farmers safeguard their livelihood and continue farming with confidence. Farmers are encouraged to enroll every season to protect their crops and income.
