What are the types and uses of organic fertilizers?

Organic fertilizers are natural materials used to improve soil fertility and provide nutrients to crops. They come from plant, animal, or natural sources and release nutrients slowly into the soil. Many farmers in India are increasingly using organic fertilizers because they improve soil health, reduce dependency on chemicals, and support sustainable farming. Understanding the types and uses of organic fertilizers helps farmers choose the right option for their crops.

One of the most common organic fertilizers is farmyard manure. It is made from decomposed cattle dung, urine, and bedding materials. Farmyard manure improves soil structure, increases water-holding capacity, and supplies small amounts of essential nutrients. It is mainly used before sowing or planting and is suitable for almost all crops, including cereals, pulses, vegetables, and fruit crops.

Compost is another widely used organic fertilizer. It is prepared by decomposing crop residues, kitchen waste, weeds, and other organic materials. Compost improves soil fertility and provides nutrients in a balanced way. It also increases beneficial microorganisms in the soil. Compost is commonly applied during land preparation or as top dressing in vegetables and orchards.

Vermicompost is produced using earthworms that convert organic waste into nutrient-rich manure. Vermicompost is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients. It improves root growth and overall plant health. Because it is more concentrated, smaller quantities are enough. Vermicompost is commonly used in vegetables, flowers, nurseries, and fruit crops.

Green manure is another important type of organic fertilizer. Crops like sunhemp, dhaincha, or cowpea are grown and then ploughed into the soil at the flowering stage. Green manure adds organic matter and natural nitrogen to the soil. It is especially useful before rice, sugarcane, and vegetable crops.

Oil cakes, such as neem cake, groundnut cake, and mustard cake, are by-products obtained after oil extraction from seeds. These cakes supply nutrients and also help control soil pests and diseases. Neem cake is especially useful because it reduces nematode and insect problems along with improving soil fertility.

Poultry manure is rich in nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus. It is very effective but should always be well-decomposed before application. Fresh poultry manure can damage crops. It is commonly used in vegetables, maize, and fodder crops.

Biofertilizers are also considered organic inputs. These include beneficial microorganisms that help fix nitrogen or make nutrients available to plants. Examples include nitrogen-fixing bacteria and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria. They are usually applied to seeds or soil and help reduce chemical fertilizer requirement.

The main use of organic fertilizers is to improve soil health over the long term. They make soil loose and fertile, improve water retention, and increase beneficial microbial activity. Organic fertilizers are best applied before sowing or planting so that nutrients become available slowly during crop growth. In vegetables and orchards, they can also be used as top dressing.

In conclusion, organic fertilizers come in many forms, each with specific benefits. Regular use of farmyard manure, compost, vermicompost, green manure, oil cakes, and biofertilizers improves soil fertility and crop productivity. By using organic fertilizers wisely, farmers can reduce input costs, protect the environment, and achieve sustainable farming with healthy yields.
