How to use Trichoderma fungicide?

Trichoderma is a beneficial fungus widely used in Indian agriculture as a biological fungicide. It helps control many soil-borne fungal diseases and also improves plant growth. Unlike chemical fungicides, Trichoderma is safe for soil, crops, farmers, and the environment. Many farmers want to know the correct way to use Trichoderma so that they get maximum benefit. Proper method and timing of application are very important for good results.

Trichoderma works by controlling harmful fungi in the soil and around plant roots. It competes with disease-causing fungi for space and food, suppresses their growth, and protects plant roots. It also improves root development and helps plants absorb nutrients better. Because it is a living organism, Trichoderma should be handled carefully.

One of the most common and effective methods is seed treatment. Before sowing, Trichoderma can be mixed with seeds to protect seedlings from early-stage diseases. Seeds should be slightly moistened and then mixed thoroughly with Trichoderma powder so that all seeds are evenly coated. Treated seeds should be dried in shade and sown on the same day. Seed treatment helps protect young roots from fungal attack during germination.

Another important method is soil application. Trichoderma is very effective when applied to the soil because most fungal diseases start from the root zone. For soil application, Trichoderma is usually mixed with well-decomposed farmyard manure or compost. This mixture should be kept in shade for a few hours before application. Then it is broadcast evenly in the field or applied near the root zone. Soil application improves soil health and controls root-related diseases.

In transplanted crops like vegetables and fruit plants, root dip treatment is very useful. Seedlings are dipped in a Trichoderma solution before transplanting. This protects roots from fungal infection and helps seedlings establish faster. Root dip treatment is especially helpful in crops prone to wilt and root rot problems.

Trichoderma can also be applied through drip irrigation or soil drenching in standing crops. This method ensures that the fungus reaches the root zone directly. Soil drenching around affected plants is useful when disease symptoms appear in patches.

While using Trichoderma, moisture in the soil is very important. Trichoderma grows and multiplies well in moist soil. Very dry soil reduces its effectiveness. Light irrigation after application helps it establish better. At the same time, waterlogging should be avoided.

It is very important to avoid mixing Trichoderma with chemical fungicides. Chemicals can kill Trichoderma and reduce its effectiveness. If chemical fungicides are needed, a gap of several days should be maintained before or after applying Trichoderma.

Trichoderma should always be stored properly. It should be kept in a cool, dry, and shaded place. Exposure to heat and sunlight reduces its effectiveness. Always check the expiry date before use, as expired material may not work well.

Best results are obtained when Trichoderma is used preventively, before disease becomes severe. It works slowly but provides long-lasting protection by improving soil health.

In conclusion, Trichoderma is a safe and effective biological fungicide when used correctly. Seed treatment, soil application, root dip, and soil drenching are common methods. Proper moisture, correct timing, and avoiding chemical mixing are key points. Regular use of Trichoderma helps control fungal diseases naturally, improves plant growth, and supports sustainable farming.
