What is bele parihara?

“Bele Parihara” is a term commonly used in Kannada-speaking regions, especially in Karnataka, to describe crop compensation or financial relief given to farmers when their crops are damaged. This support is provided by the government to help farmers recover from losses caused by natural disasters, drought, floods, pests, diseases, or other unexpected events that destroy or reduce crop yield. The word “bele” means crop, and “parihara” means compensation or relief.

Farming depends heavily on climate, and even one season of severe weather can push a farmer into financial difficulty. Bele Parihara helps reduce this risk by ensuring that farmers receive some amount of money to compensate for the damaged crop. This support helps them continue farming in the next season without falling into debt.

Bele Parihara is usually announced when a particular region is officially declared as drought-hit, flood-hit, storm-affected, or pest-affected. Government officers conduct field surveys to assess the level of crop damage. They check whether the loss is mild, moderate, or severe. After the damage percentage is assessed, the government releases compensation amounts to the eligible farmers.

The compensation amount varies depending on several factors:

The type of crop grown, such as paddy, ragi, pulses, oilseeds, fruits, or vegetables.

The extent of damage—partial loss or complete loss.

The district or taluk where the damage occurred.

The guidelines fixed by the state government for that particular season.

To receive Bele Parihara, farmers must have some basic documentation. In most cases, they need:

A record of land ownership or tenancy details.

A registered crop entry for the current season (potage or RTC entry).

A bank account linked with Aadhaar for direct transfer.

Farmers who cultivate leased land may also receive compensation if their names are correctly recorded in the local agricultural records.

Once the assessment is completed, compensation is transferred through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. This means the money goes directly to the farmer’s bank account without middlemen. This system reduces delays and ensures transparency.

Bele Parihara is different from crop insurance schemes like PM Fasal Bima Yojana. Insurance requires the farmer to enroll and pay a premium. But Bele Parihara is relief assistance provided directly by the state government during natural calamities, even if the farmer has not enrolled in an insurance scheme.

The main purpose of Bele Parihara is to help farmers continue farming even after facing heavy losses. It supports them in buying seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs for the next season. It also reduces the burden of loans and helps farmers stay stable during difficult years.

In simple words, Bele Parihara is a government compensation program that protects farmers from unexpected crop losses. It provides timely financial support, helps farmers recover faster, and encourages them to keep farming confidently. For many rural families, Bele Parihara serves as a lifeline during natural disasters and agricultural crises.
