What is PM Fasal Bima Yojana?

PM Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) is a government insurance scheme designed to protect farmers from the financial losses they face when their crops fail due to natural disasters, pests, or diseases. Farming in India is heavily dependent on weather, and even one unexpected event—like heavy rain, drought, hailstorm, or pest attack—can destroy a farmer’s entire crop. PM Fasal Bima Yojana helps reduce this risk by providing compensation so that farmers can recover and continue farming without falling into debt.

The scheme was launched to ensure that every farmer, big or small, gets affordable crop insurance. Under this program, farmers pay only a small part of the insurance premium, while the central and state governments pay the rest. For most farmers, the premium rate is very low and fixed. For example, farmers pay 2% of the insured amount for Kharif crops, 1.5% for Rabi crops, and 5% for commercial and horticulture crops. The remaining premium is paid by the government, so the farmer gets full insurance coverage at a minimal cost.

PMFBY covers many types of risks that farmers commonly face. The first is prevented sowing, which means the farmer could not even sow the crop due to adverse weather, such as delayed rainfall or floods. The scheme also covers crop losses during the growing season, whether caused by drought, excess rain, flood, pests, diseases, or any other natural calamity. Additionally, it covers post-harvest losses up to two weeks after harvesting—this is especially useful when unexpected rain damages the harvested crop kept for drying in the field.

In some areas, the scheme also covers localized calamities such as hailstorms, landslides, or cloudbursts that affect only certain villages. This feature ensures that farmers in small pockets of affected areas do not get ignored.

The process of enrolling in PMFBY is simple. Farmers who take crop loans from banks are automatically covered under the scheme unless they choose to opt out. Other farmers who do not take loans can register through their nearest bank, Common Service Centre (CSC), or online portal during the sowing season. To claim compensation, farmers must report crop damage to the authorities or helpline numbers within the specified window. After assessment, compensation is transferred directly to the farmer’s bank account.

PMFBY also encourages farmers to adopt modern agricultural practices. When farmers know their crops are insured, they feel more confident investing in better seeds, fertilizers, and technologies. The scheme reduces the fear of loss and strengthens the agricultural economy by providing stability.

In simple words, PM Fasal Bima Yojana is a safety net for farmers. It ensures that even if a crop fails due to bad weather or pest attack, the farmer does not suffer a complete financial loss. With low premiums, wide coverage, and direct compensation, the scheme helps protect farmer income and promotes secure, sustainable farming. This insurance support gives farmers the confidence to continue cultivation year after year, even in challenging conditions.
