What are the fertilizer doses in apple?

Apple is an important fruit crop grown widely in the hilly regions of India, especially in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand. To get healthy growth, proper flowering, and good-quality fruits, apple trees need the right amount of fertilizers at the right time. Balanced nutrition not only improves yield but also increases the tree’s resistance to diseases and environmental stress. Many farmers are unsure about how much fertilizer to give and when. Understanding the recommended fertilizer doses makes apple cultivation easier and more productive.

The fertilizer requirement of apple trees depends mainly on their age. Young trees need smaller amounts to support early growth, while older trees require higher doses to maintain fruit production.

Fertilizer Dose for Young Apple Plants (1–3 years)

During the first three years, the main focus is on developing a strong root system and healthy branches.
Farmers can apply per tree:

10–20 kg of farmyard manure (FYM)

50–150 g nitrogen (N)

25–50 g phosphorus (P₂O₅)

40–80 g potassium (K₂O)

Organic manure helps improve soil structure, while small doses of NPK encourage steady growth without burning young roots.

Fertilizer Dose for Bearing Age Trees (4–10 years)

As the trees start flowering and fruiting, their nutrient needs increase.
Per tree, farmers can apply:

25–40 kg FYM

200–350 g nitrogen

150–250 g phosphorus

200–300 g potassium

This stage is very important because balanced nutrition affects fruit size, colour, shape, and sweetness.

Fertilizer Dose for Mature Apple Trees (10+ years)

Fully grown trees produce more fruits and therefore require more nutrients.
Per tree, the recommended dose is:

40–60 kg FYM

400–600 g nitrogen

250–350 g phosphorus

300–500 g potassium

These quantities help maintain fruit quality across seasons and prevent nutrient exhaustion in the soil.

How and When to Apply Fertilizers

1. Farmyard manure should be applied during winter (December–January) when the trees are dormant. Manure improves soil moisture, fertility, and microbial activity.

2. Phosphorus and potassium should be applied in a single dose before the new growth starts, usually in late winter or early spring.

3. Nitrogen should be applied in two splits:

Half dose at the beginning of the growing season (spring)

Remaining half after fruit set
Split application prevents excessive vegetative growth and ensures steady nutrient availability.

Role of Micronutrients

Micronutrients like boron, zinc, calcium, and magnesium are very important for fruit quality.

Boron helps in flower formation and fruit set.

Calcium prevents fruit cracking and improves storage life.

Zinc supports leaf growth and shoot development.

Spraying micronutrient mixtures during the growing season helps avoid deficiency symptoms.

Irrigation and Soil Testing

Nutrient uptake depends heavily on proper irrigation. Light irrigation after fertilizer application helps nutrients reach the root zone. Regular soil testing every 2–3 years helps farmers adjust fertilizer doses according to soil health.

Conclusion

In simple words, apple trees need the right combination of FYM, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients based on their age. Applying fertilizers at the correct time and in the right quantity ensures healthy trees and high-quality fruits, helping farmers achieve better yields and higher income.
