What are the eligibility criteria for a Kisan Credit Card?

The Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme is an important financial support system for farmers in India. It helps them get timely and affordable loans for agriculture and allied activities. Before applying for a KCC, it is important for farmers to understand whether they meet the eligibility criteria. Knowing these requirements helps avoid delays and ensures a smooth loan approval process.

The first and most basic eligibility condition is that the applicant must be an Indian farmer engaged in farming or allied activities. This includes farmers who grow crops, rear animals, or are involved in dairy, poultry, fisheries, or other agricultural operations. Both small and large farmers can apply for the KCC.

Individual farmers, as well as joint farmers who cultivate land together, are eligible for the scheme. This means that if two or more family members share ownership or cultivation rights, they can apply jointly. Tenant farmers, oral lessees, and sharecroppers may also be eligible, depending on the bank’s rules and the documentation they provide. They must be able to show proof of cultivation or a certificate from the local authority confirming their farming activity.

Another major eligibility requirement is land ownership or cultivation rights. Farmers must provide documents that confirm that they either own or cultivate the land. These documents help banks decide the loan limit based on land size, cropping pattern, and estimated production cost. For farmers involved in allied activities such as dairy or fisheries, land ownership may not be necessary, but proof of activity is required.

Farmers who belong to Self-Help Groups (SHGs) or Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) can also apply for KCC. This is especially helpful for small and marginal farmers who may not have individual land records. The group structure supports them in accessing credit more easily.

Another eligibility factor is the age limit. Usually, the applicant should be between 18 and 75 years of age. Farmers above 60 years of age may require a co-borrower, often a legal heir, so the bank has added security for the loan.

The farmer should also have a good repayment history, especially if they have taken loans before. Banks check whether the applicant has any outstanding loans or defaults. A clean financial record improves the chances of getting the KCC approved quickly.

Farmers involved in horticulture, sericulture, beekeeping, fish farming, goat farming, piggery, poultry, or other allied sectors are also eligible for the KCC scheme. They must show proof of their activity and provide basic documents required by the bank.

Banks may also consider whether the farmer has a functional bank account, Aadhaar card, and other identification documents. Although these are not eligibility conditions by themselves, they are necessary for completing the application process.

In simple words, a farmer is eligible for a Kisan Credit Card if they are engaged in farming or allied activities, have land ownership or cultivation rights, fall within the required age limit, and provide proper documents. Tenant farmers, sharecroppers, SHG and JLG members can also apply. Understanding these criteria helps farmers apply confidently and take advantage of the financial support offered by the KCC scheme.
