What are the recommended varieties of maize?

Maize is one of the most important cereal crops grown across India. It is used as food, fodder, and raw material for many industries. To get high yield and good-quality grains, choosing the right variety is one of the most important decisions for farmers. Different varieties of maize are suitable for different seasons, soil types, and regions. Today, improved hybrid and composite varieties are available that give better performance, resist pests and diseases, and tolerate drought or excess moisture. Knowing the recommended maize varieties helps farmers select the right seed for profitable cultivation.

One of the most commonly grown maize types is hybrid maize. Hybrids give higher yields compared to traditional varieties and perform well under proper management. Popular hybrids include HM-4, HM-5, HQPM-1, HQPM-5, HQPM-7, and HQPM-9. These high-quality protein maize (HQPM) hybrids contain more lysine and tryptophan, making them nutritionally superior. They are preferred for poultry feed and household consumption.

For kharif season (monsoon cropping), many farmers choose hybrids such as DHM-103, DHM-117, and DHM-121. These varieties tolerate excess moisture, grow well under monsoon conditions, and produce uniform cobs. Hybrids like Bio-9681, NK-6240, and P-3396 are also popular in several states because they withstand common pests and give stable yields even in changing weather.

In rabi (winter) season, varieties like DHM-113, Pratap Makka-3, and HQPM-5 are widely recommended. These perform well under cooler temperatures and respond positively to irrigation and fertilizer application. Rabi maize generally gives higher yields because winter conditions support strong root and plant development.

Some farmers choose composite varieties, which are cheaper than hybrids and allow seed saving for next season. Popular composite varieties include Vijay, Navjot, Jawahar Makka-216, and Shakti. These varieties are hardy, require fewer inputs, and suit rainfed or low-input farming situations.

Sweet corn and baby corn varieties are also gaining popularity for market cultivation. Sugar-75, Madhuri, and Priya are common sweet corn varieties grown for their tender, sweet kernels. Baby corn varieties like G-5414 and G-5417 give multiple pickings and have good market demand. These varieties offer higher profit when grown for fresh markets or processing industries.

In drought-prone areas, farmers prefer stress-tolerant varieties such as Drought Tolerant Maize Hybrids (DTMH) developed under special breeding programs. These varieties survive dry spells and ensure yield even when rainfall is irregular.

When choosing a maize variety, farmers should consider factors like duration (short, medium, or long), grain type, soil fertility, pest resistance, and market demand. Consulting local agriculture officers or Krishi Vigyan Kendras helps identify the best-performing varieties for a particular region.

In simple words, recommended maize varieties include high-yielding hybrids like DHM-117, DHM-121, HQPM series, and commercial hybrids like NK-6240 and P-3396. Composite varieties like Vijay and Shakti are good for low-input fields, while sweet corn and baby corn varieties offer higher market value. Selecting the right variety ensures better growth, stronger plants, and higher profits for maize farmers.
