What is the Agmark government scheme?

Agmark is a certification system introduced by the Government of India to ensure the quality and purity of agricultural products. Many farmers and consumers often worry about adulteration or low-quality food items in the market. The Agmark scheme helps solve this problem by providing a trusted quality mark on products that meet strict standards. When a product carries the Agmark seal, it means it has been tested, graded, and approved according to government guidelines.

The word “Agmark” comes from “Ag” for agriculture and “mark” for certification. It is managed by the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The main purpose of the Agmark scheme is to protect buyers from unsafe and low-grade products and to help farmers get better prices for high-quality produce.

Agmark certification applies to a wide range of agricultural and food items such as cereals, pulses, spices, edible oils, ghee, honey, fruits, vegetables, and even some processed foods. For example, items like turmeric, chilli powder, groundnut oil, and wheat flour can all be Agmark-certified. Each product has specific standards related to cleanliness, purity, color, moisture content, and presence of impurities. Only products that pass the required tests receive the Agmark label.

For farmers, Agmark is especially beneficial. When they sell Agmark-certified produce, they can earn a higher price in the market because buyers trust the quality. It also helps farmers reach bigger markets like government procurement centers, export agencies, and supermarkets. Agmark encourages farmers to follow good grading, sorting, cleaning, and storage practices so that their produce meets quality standards.

To get Agmark certification, processors or traders must apply to the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection. The product samples are tested in approved Agmark laboratories. If the quality matches the standard, the certificate is issued. The product then carries the Agmark label, which assures consumers that it is safe and pure.

Agmark does not replace other marks like FSSAI. Instead, it works alongside them. While FSSAI focuses on food safety and hygiene, Agmark ensures purity and grading of agricultural items. For example, ghee with an Agmark seal guarantees that it is pure and free from mixing.

One major advantage of the Agmark system is that it promotes transparency. Consumers gain confidence knowing that the product they are buying has been scientifically tested. Traders also benefit because they can market high-quality products with a trusted government-backed label.

Agmark also plays an important role in exports. Many countries require Indian agricultural products to have proper certification before import. Agmark helps meet these requirements and supports India’s agricultural exports.

In simple words, the Agmark government scheme is a quality certification system that ensures agricultural products are pure, safe, and properly graded. It protects consumers from adulteration and helps farmers get better prices for their produce. By promoting quality and trust, Agmark strengthens agricultural marketing and improves the income and reputation of farmers across India.
