What is the PM Kisan scheme?

PM-KISAN, also known as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, is a government scheme launched to provide financial support to small and marginal farmers across India. The main aim of the scheme is to help farmers meet their basic agricultural expenses and reduce financial stress. Farming often requires money for seeds, fertilizers, labour, irrigation, and other essential inputs. PM-KISAN provides direct financial assistance so that farmers can manage these needs more comfortably.
Under the PM-KISAN scheme, eligible farmers receive ₹6,000 per year. This amount is given in three equal installments of ₹2,000 each. The money is transferred directly into the farmer’s bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring that the assistance reaches the farmer without delay or middlemen. This financial support can be used for any agricultural or household need, giving farmers more flexibility.
All small and marginal farmers who own cultivable land can apply for this scheme. There is no restriction on the type of crop grown or the size of the landholding, as long as the land is in the farmer’s name. Even farmers with very small land areas, such as half an acre or one acre, can benefit. Tenant farmers, however, may not be eligible because the scheme is based on land ownership.
To register for PM-KISAN, farmers need basic documents such as Aadhaar card, bank account details, and land ownership records. Registration can be done through the official PM-KISAN portal, Common Service Centres (CSCs), or with the help of the local agriculture department. Once the application is approved, the farmer starts receiving installments regularly.
Each installment is released after verification by the government. Farmers can check their installment status online using their Aadhaar number, mobile number, or bank account number. Transparency in the scheme ensures that farmers know exactly when their money is credited.
The PM-KISAN scheme has many benefits. It provides timely financial assistance, helps farmers buy inputs for the next sowing season, reduces dependence on loans, and improves household stability. Many farmers use this money to purchase seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. Others use it for irrigation charges, livestock care, or basic family needs.
Another important advantage is that the scheme promotes digital inclusion. Farmers become familiar with online portals, DBT systems, and digital banking. This makes future interactions with government programs easier.
The scheme also connects with other government initiatives. For example, PM-KISAN beneficiaries are automatically covered under the PM-Kisan Maandhan Yojana, a pension scheme for small farmers, if they choose to join.
In simple words, the PM-KISAN scheme is a government program that gives ₹6,000 per year to farmers in three installments. It helps them manage agricultural expenses, supports their income, and ensures financial stability. By providing direct benefit transfers, the scheme reduces the financial burden on farmers and helps them focus on improving their crops and livelihoods.
