How to control termite or army worm in potato?

Potato is one of the major vegetable crops grown across India, and it requires healthy soil and timely protection from pests. Among the common pests affecting potato crops, termites and armyworms cause serious damage if not managed early. They attack the crop at different stages and can reduce yield, quality, and storage life. Understanding their behavior and using proper control methods helps farmers protect the crop effectively.

1. Termite Damage in Potato

Termites usually attack the crop below the soil. They feed on tubers, roots, and underground stems. Their damage becomes visible only after the crop is harvested or when plants start wilting. Common signs include:

Tubers with holes or tunnels

Drying or wilting of plants

Presence of soil-covered termite tubes near the base

Termites prefer dry soil conditions and survive in fields with leftover organic matter, stubbles, or old termite mounds.

How to Control Termites

a. Field Preparation
Before planting, the field should be deeply ploughed to break old termite colonies. Removing old crop residue reduces the chance of infestation.

b. Seed Treatment
Treating potato seed tubers with recommended insecticides before planting helps protect the crop during early growth. This acts as the first line of defence.

c. Soil Treatment
Applying insecticides in the planting furrows or mixing with soil around the root zone helps control termite activity. Farmers should avoid over-dry soil and maintain moderate moisture because termites thrive in dry conditions.

d. Irrigation Management
Regular and timely watering discourages termite movement. Dry soil encourages termite attack, so maintaining proper moisture levels is important.

2. Armyworm Damage in Potato

Armyworms are caterpillars that feed on potato leaves. They can destroy foliage quickly, leaving the crop weak and reducing tuber development. Common symptoms include:

Chewed leaves

Skeletonized leaf surface

Presence of green or brown caterpillars

Armyworms usually attack during warm and humid periods, especially after rainfall.

How to Control Armyworms

a. Field Monitoring
Regularly inspecting fields helps detect early infestation. Look for egg clusters under leaves and small caterpillars on the lower surface.

b. Light Traps or Pheromone Traps
These traps help farmers detect and reduce the number of adult moths, preventing egg laying.

c. Natural Control
Birds, beneficial insects, and parasitic wasps help naturally control armyworms. Maintaining some natural vegetation around the field supports these beneficial organisms.

d. Biological Sprays
Spraying neem-based products helps reduce early-stage caterpillars. Neem disturbs feeding activity and slows their growth.

e. Recommended Insecticides
For heavy infestation, farmers may need to use insecticides that are effective against caterpillar pests. These should be applied during evening hours when the larvae are actively feeding.

Conclusion

Termites and armyworms can damage potato crops at different stages, but both can be controlled with timely action. Good field preparation, seed treatment, soil management, and maintaining adequate moisture help reduce termite attack. For armyworms, early monitoring, traps, neem spray, and appropriate insecticides provide effective control. With a combination of preventive and curative measures, farmers can protect their potato fields and ensure healthy, high-yielding crops.
