What is the Fertilizer Dose of Coconut Plant?
Coconut is one of the most important plantation crops grown in India, especially in coastal states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha. It is often called the “Tree of Life” because almost every part of the coconut tree is useful — from the fruit to the leaves and trunk. To get a healthy and high-yielding coconut palm, proper nutrient management is very important. Applying the right fertilizer dose at the right time helps in good growth, strong roots, and higher nut production.
1. Importance of Fertilizer in Coconut
Coconut is a long-duration crop that remains in the field for many years. It continuously removes nutrients from the soil through nut production and leaf growth. If these nutrients are not replaced, the palm becomes weak, leaves turn yellow, and nut yield decreases. Regular fertilizer application ensures healthy growth and sustainable production over the years.
2. Nutrient Requirement of Coconut
Coconut needs all major nutrients — Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K) — along with micronutrients like Magnesium, Zinc, and Boron. Each nutrient plays a different role:
-
Nitrogen (N): Helps in leaf and vegetative growth.
-
Phosphorus (P): Promotes strong root development and better flowering.
-
Potassium (K): Improves nut setting, copra content, and disease resistance.
3. Recommended Fertilizer Dose per Palm (Annual Basis)
For adult coconut palms (above 5 years old), the general fertilizer recommendation is:
-
Nitrogen (N): 500 grams (about 1 kg urea)
-
Phosphorus (P₂O₅): 320 grams (about 2 kg superphosphate)
-
Potassium (K₂O): 1200 grams (about 2 kg muriate of potash – MOP)
For young palms (up to 5 years), apply one-fourth to half of the above dose depending on age. Increase the quantity gradually each year as the palm grows.
4. Time and Method of Application
The fertilizer dose should be divided into two equal parts and applied twice a year — once before the monsoon (May–June) and again after the monsoon (September–October).
Application method:
-
Dig a circular basin about 1.5 meters in radius and 20–25 cm deep around the base of the palm.
-
Apply fertilizers evenly in the basin and mix with soil.
-
Water the palms after fertilizer application if there is no rain.
In irrigated areas, fertigation (fertilizer through drip irrigation) can also be practiced for efficient use of nutrients.
5. Organic Manure and Green Leaves
Along with chemical fertilizers, apply organic manure like farmyard manure (FYM), compost, or green leaves once a year. About 25–50 kg of organic manure per palm per year helps improve soil fertility, moisture holding capacity, and microbial activity.
6. Micronutrient Management
Sometimes, coconut palms show yellowing or poor nut development due to micronutrient deficiency. To correct this, apply a mixture of micronutrients (such as magnesium sulfate, zinc sulfate, and borax) once a year or spray them as foliar solution on leaves.
7. Mulching and Water Management
Mulching the base of the palm with dry leaves or husks helps retain soil moisture and improves fertilizer efficiency. Proper and regular irrigation is also important for better nutrient uptake, especially in summer months.
Conclusion
For healthy and high-yielding coconut palms, proper fertilizer management is essential. Apply a balanced dose of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium along with organic manure and micronutrients at regular intervals. Keep the basin weed-free, irrigate properly, and maintain good soil health. With timely and balanced fertilizer application, coconut farmers can ensure higher nut yield and long-term productivity from their plantation.
